Evaluation.

My AS-Level Media task was to create a film opening. I had to plan film and edit this opening entirely by myself.

I chose to create a film noir style film opening. For this, I looked at many different film openings including ‘Snatch’, ‘Blue Steel’ and ‘Sin City’ and I tried to compare my media product to the opening of ‘Sin City’. To do this, I used a femme fatale character, dressed all in red and a male character wearing reasonably smart clothing. For the titles, I created a black background with red writing. I used this because the writing stood out and was bold and dynamic in front of the black and it also connected with the femme fatale’s clothing. Red is the sign of evil or the devil so I thought it was the perfect colour choice for my film. To create suspense, the camera only shows the female character for the start of the film. When the male character enters, you cannot see his face until the dialogue begins. This creates enigma as the audience will want to know who he is and why he’s there. The film is a mix of film noir and thriller genres. It is film noir because of the characters and the comparison with ‘Sin City’ but it also has some thriller conventions such as the shooting and setting the photo on fire. This also creates enigma as the audience will want to watch more and find out why she killed the man and who is in the photograph. I used minimal sound in the opening, just creating the sound of the wind and using a gunshot effect. I think this creates more enigma and places more importance on the mise-en-scene rather than the sound. I used reasonable slow editing to begin with and it quickens as the opening continues. This builds the pace and draws the audience in to the scene and also builds up towards the peak of the scene.

My media product mainly represents two kinds of social groups: the male victim and the powerful, independent female. These two characters break the norm of stereotypical characters as the female is usually less independent and the male is normally in charge. I wanted to reverse this stereotype for my film as I thought the female character should be stronger in order to be the strong lead character. I created this representation by showing the female character in the camera longer than the male and using low angle shots to suggest her superiority. She also wears the typical femme fatale costume as she is wearing redThis will be recognisable to the target audience as they will have seen film noir or thriller films before. I decided to use subtle hints about the male character. I wanted to represent him as a criminal but I thought that if he was running around with a knife and a hoodie that it would ruin the style of the film so I decided to have his costume as quite smart so he looked like an important business man and then showed that he is an assistant of a killer. This representation worked quite well and it made the film more interesting. I also think that this creates a good representation of criminals because you can’t always tell when people are criminals or when they are trustworthy. The camera also doesn't show a shot of the character's face to imply that he isn't the hero character.

My film doesn’t look very much like a large budget blockbuster film: mostly because I didn’t have a large budget for it. For this reason I think my film would have more of a niche audience and would be distributed by an independent film company for the viewing on places such as film 4 or at independent film festivals around the UK. Film 4, for example often has special film nights in which they show only certain genres of film. I think my product would be shown on a film noir or thriller night as then it would get the correct audience and people who prefer chick flicks or comedies wouldn’t watch it. It may be released for viewing on the internet, again for niche audiences, because it is a very low budget, independent film and it wouldn’t be able to use lots of money to distribute or to advertise it so the internet is a perfect place to distribute and advertise films quite cheaply but also making sure that it gets a lot of viewing from the correct audience. I would not expect this film to become extremely popular and therefore it probably would not need to release merchandising but I decided that later on in the film it would use a lot of interesting music so it may develop to create a soundtrack for the film which could be distributed with the film itself online.

The audience for my film would be small and very niche. It would probably be young as I used younger actors, however, the film would probably need an certification of either 12 or 15 because of the killing and the dark substance within the film. This would mean that people under the age of 12 wouldn’t be able to watch it, therefore making the audience between the ages of 12 and 35. Mostly females would watch this film because of the strong female lead but males would also want to watch it because they are more likely to enjoy this genre of film. The audience will probably be people who enjoy watching independent films and not the large blockbusters in cinemas as it will only be found online or on channels such as film 4, which has independent and low-budget films. People who enjoy expensive, blockbuster films would not enjoy it so that would mean a smaller audience. However, although the audience is niche, there will probably be a lot of people interested in seeing the film as it is different to most other films and it has a powerful storyline.

The film uses typical conventions for the genre so it was simple techniques that target the audience. Anyone interested in film noir or thriller would be interested in this film and by using ideas influenced by other films, the audience would enjoy it. My film matches the expectations of the audience because the specific niche audience of the film would be aware of the budget etc of the film so they would therefore have an idea of what to expect. Hopefully, for some people, the fact that the film is unknown is something that draws them to watch it. This would be very helpful to me whilst attracting the audience because something as simple as the budget would entice the audience. The use of young actors, though not entirely optional, would attract the younger audience for the film, which is my target audience. It also helps the audience to put themselves in the place of the character which is what people want to see in films. This would also help to attract and address the target audience.

Specifically, my first shot would draw the audience in as it is very simple but it creates enigma and the audience will begin to ask questions about the character’s importance.

The titles will hook in the audience because they are very effective and they slow down the pace of the
opening. By having them on a black background, it cuts away from the scene and creates dramatic tension. The soundtrack, although minimal, also addresses the audience as it creates the sense of horror and the wind in the background builds suspense. Finally, the camera angles don’t often show both characters in the shot together so while the camera is on one character, the audience will be wondering how the other character is reacting and the expressions that they would have and the editing always cuts away from the main source of the action which builds even more tension within the audience.

During the creation of this product, I discovered a lot of new technologies and equipment. Firstly, I had never used professional recording equipment before the beginning of this task, that was a very enjoyable process for me because I was able to discover filming in a more professional way rather than filming on a camera-phone. I also learnt about the need to use a wide variety of shots and the amount of filming that you have to do in order to make sure you have the correct shots for editing. I discovered that lighting is extremely important as I filmed on a sunny day and the direction of the camera made a huge difference to the lighting in the shot. The editing was interesting for me as I didn’t realise how much was needed to do in order to get good editing. It also takes an extremely long time which is something I didn’t know before starting this project. I was able to use an Apple Macintosh computer to do my editing. I had never worked on a Mac before so that was quite challenging to begin with but once I got used to it I thoroughly enjoyed it. I also found out about Garageband and iMovie

These pieces of software are extremely interesting to use and are also fantastic for editing. I didn’t have music in the soundtrack for my opening so I didn’t have the pleasure of using Garageband properly but I did some practice and testing and I loved the freedom that you have whilst creating your own piece of music. It was extremely enjoyable and a great way to improve your musical skills. I also decided to put my product onto YouTube to see what other people thought about it. This was interesting because I had never used YouTube uploading before the task and it was good to learn about all the different things you can upload and set up on YouTube. I will definitely use it again so I’m glad that I learnt about it.

I have learnt a lot of new things during the process from my preliminary task to my final product. Firstly, I got the chance to properly plan my product in my final piece. I also got the chance to work individually which was a lot more hard work but it also had many advantages and it gave me more freedom with ideas and time planning. My confidence has improved greatly during the process and I am extremely impressed with what I have achieved. When I started the course I had no idea that I would be able to create a film opening and I am very proud of myself for being able to do that. As well as creating the product, I have also learnt many things about shot types, music and editing. For my preliminary task, I only had chance to film a small amount so it was great to learn about more shots and creating different moods with the different camera angles that you can use. Music wasn’t used in my preliminary task but it also wasn’t used in my final task so I didn’t learn a lot about that aspect of film-making but I had the chance to mess around with Garageband so it was a lot of fun. Finally, editing was the most important part of my final product but I did little to no editing on my preliminary task so it was quite complex to learn about all the different editing techniques in such a short space of time but it was enjoyable nonetheless and I feel like I have learnt a lot of new things within this project which makes me extremely grateful that I took the course.

Filming & Editing

My first and only filming session went very well so there's no need for me to re-fim but I would like to get a couple of shots of the gun whilst it is being shot. I will film this on Monday and edit it before the deadline on Wednesday.

My editing has been very successful and I decided not to use a soundtrack because I thought it was more interesting and powerful. I used cut transitions for effect and I used a simple black background with red writing to draw attention to it.

Soundtrack

I have decided not to use any music in the background of my opening as I think it is more effective without, also, I have dialogue within the opening which would be ruined if I put music on it. Instead, I added sound effects of wind in the background and also a gunshot sound for the shooting.

Casting

I had some more problems with filming as my the actors taking part couldn't be there for filming. Consequently I have only been able to use two people to be in my film. Luckily, this worked out quite well and I am happy with the results I have got from filming. I will now start to edit the filming and I am hoping that the final result will come out well.

Shot list

Wide, establishing shot of cliff edge, looking towards the sea.
Camera slowly turns around to see Emma walking across the car park, towards the cliff.
Emma stops to create a medium shot of her, to the right of the screen.
Josh walks up on the left of the screen.
Shot reverse shot sequence between Josh and Emma for dialogue.
Wide shot from behind of Ben walking towards Josh.
Close-up of Josh's face for shooting.
Medium close-up of Emma.
Close-up of lighter and photo.
Camera follows the photo as Emma drops it.
Slow zoom of photograph on the floor to end at extreme close up of the burning photo.

Script

Enter Emma. Stand at the edge of the cliff, looking out towards the sea.
Enter Josh, walks towards Emma from behind and stands next to her, looking at her.

Emma: You're Late
Josh: I have what you asked for

Josh hands her a brown envelope

Emma: Looking inside the envelope Is this all I need?
Josh: Yes that's everything
Emma: Good

Enter Ben, appearing from the shadows with a gun. Shoots Josh in the head.
Emma takes an photograph out of the envelope. Takes out a lighter and sets the photo on fire. Drops it to the floor.

End of scene

Proposal

My idea is to create a 'film noir' film opening scene.

The storyline will include a woman standing at a cliff edge waiting for someone. A man will then come to see her and they will exchange two lines of conversation before the man gives her a brown envelope. More dialogue will be exchanged and then another man will come into the scene and shoot the first man in the head with a gun. After this, the woman will open the envelope and take out a photograph before setting it on fire and throwing it on the floor.

The camera will be quite still during this scene and the takes will be long to make it look as realistic as possible. At the end of the scene, a slow zoom will end the opening with a close-up of the burning photograph on the floor.

Plan

My film opening will be filmed on a cliff edge in Torquay. I will use a female character and two male characters.
The female character will be standing at the top of a cliff waiting for someone to meet her. The first male character will come and meet her and give her a brown envelope. She will open the envelope and look inside briefly. The other male character will then come out of the shadows and shoot the first male character in the head. The woman will then take a photo out from the envelope, look at it and then set it on fire before throwing it on the floor.
I will film this in the evening when the sun is beginning to set so that it is dark but i have enough light to see what's happening in the frame but dark enough to look like it's happening during the evening.

New idea.

My film hasn't turned out as well as I planned so I am going to re-do my entire film plan.

My initial idea is to have a woman standing on a cliff edge and a man comes to meet her. He will give her a brown envelope and then another character will come and shoot the man. Then the woman will set a photo on fire and drop it to the floor.

Shooting

I have some problems with my shooting plans as I was planning on shooting my film introduction on the Kingskerswell main road in either late night or early morning to lose the traffic in the background, however, if I filmed at this time of day the screen will be far too dark. I will have to re-think this and, as it is winter and it's getting dark early in the day, I may have to completely re-think the time and place of shooting, maybe having to shoot during the day or changing the setting to somewhere else.

I have decided to film the opening inside my school as myself and the people in my film are working a lot so it will be helpful to do it inside the school. I will change my film plan and the setting will actually become a school setting and the story will be set in a school.

Shooting list

The first shot in the opening will be an establishing shot of the road taken from the bridge.

After this, a slow zoom will be used whilst titles will appear on the screen. Once the camera is fully zoomed in so the main characters can be seen clearly, the shot will cut to a medium shot of the two characters walking.

The shots will all then follow the two characters and whenever the camera moves it will use high angle shots for the woman and low angle shots for the man to show the male superiority.

When the characters have walked to the drive, the male character will shot whilst the female character walks up the drive. A slow zoom will then be used to show the male character's face hidden in shadow.

Proposal

I am planning to create a film noir/thriller film opening.

The film is going to be about a woman who is being stalked by a shadowed figure. The opening credits will involve following the female character who is being stalked by the shadowed figure. As the two characters walk down the road, the credits will move around them.

The opening will begin with a crane shot of the two characters walking down the road. A track will then follow behind the 'stalking' character & have a view of the female character walking infront. As the characters walk, the title credits will shift and cange according to the movement of the characters. After the credits have shown, the shot will cut to a POV shot showing the female character walking up a drveway. After ths, the camera will show a shot of the 'stalker's' face and a slow zoom will finishe the opening sequence with an extreme cu of the character just before cutting to a black screen.

Initial plan

Film noir/Thriller

Woman being 'stalked' by shadowed figure
Following the figure down the road (b&w)
Start from crane watching figure
Zoom in from top of bridge
Tracking shot of figure whilst titles show
Character stops outside a drive & camera moves around to show his shadowed face
Slow zoom in & cut to black screen.

Props, costume, characters & setting:
Characters:
Woman - Emma
Stalker - Henry

Props:
Dress
High heels
Long black coat
Trilby hat
Camera
Tri-pod

Setting:
Deserted road, long drive toward a house.

My film noir: Title

I have come up with a few names for the film:
Lady of the night,
The following.
Cheat

I think I will use 'Lady of the night'.

My film noir plan

My film will be filmed on the main road in Kingskerswell. I will begin filming on the bridge near the Sloop and I will use voyeuristic shots to follow my two main characters walking down the road. The female character will be wearing a party dress, preferably in red, and the male character will be wearing a long black coat and a trilby hat.

The characters will be walking down the road with the male character following the female as if he was stalking her. When the characters get to a long drive the female character will walk up the drive and the male will stop and watch her walking away. The following shot will be a black screen.

During this opening sequence, the titles will show up during the beginning shot, from the bridge as the camera zooms in towards the two characters.

I am aiming to film this late at night or in early morning so I can get the minimalist light and there will be less traffic on the road.

Film Noir notes

Film noir is a term used to describe Hollywood crime dramas.
The classic film noir period is regarded as the early 1940s to the late 1950s.
Film noir is associated with a low key black and white style.
The term 'film noir' is French for "black film"
Film noir's were normally set in Hollywood and at the time were called either Crime Thrillers or Murder Dramas.
Usually exploring the consequences of a criminal act.
The films were darker and more pessimistic than pre-war American films.
The lighting used in film noir was very dark to create shadows.
The 'femme fatale' or fatal woman were normally found in film noirs to bring excitement and danger.
It has influenced films such as crime thrillers and sci-fi movies.
Noir is unconvential compared to other Hollywood movies of the time.

Account of the processes of the preliminary task

I came up with my idea in my group. My group consists of myself, Nikki Frost and Steff Snook.
Our idea was to do a scene of one person walking through a door, entering the room and sitting down next to someone else, watching television and exchanging conversation.
The first thing that we did was to create a storyboard of our idea. The storyboard consisted of one character walking through a living room door, walking across the room and sitting down on the coach next to another character. They then exchange about 2 minutes of conversation and then the camera shows the film that they are watching before turning back again to show them watching the film and eating popcorn. We then decided what props we needed and made a props list. After that we made a shooting list of when we would shoot each part of the scene and decided when we would shoot and where.
Once we had decided this information, we created a script of the conversation between to two characters and decided who would play the characters in the scene.
Once this was all done we began to shoot. We decided to shoot our scene at Steff's house and used Stephen and Jack to be in it. Once we finished shooting our scene we could begin to edit it.
The editing didn't take very long because the scene was already well filmed and all we had trouble with was making the television sound playing as the scene showed Stephen and Jack as we filmed the TV at a different time to when we filmed Stephen and Jack.

The Three Principles of Continuity

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=QehZjjwb7-I

The first rule of continuity is shot-reverse shot. This is used at the very beginning of the scene, when the Joker walks into the room. We first see a shot of the Joker's back, tracking him as he walks into the room, then, at 12 seconds, the camera angle changes and we see the Joker's face.

The second rule of continuity is the 180 degree rule. This is used when the characters around the table are in conversation. For example, when one of the people is talking, we always see them from the same angle. The same goes for the Joker, whenever we see him when he talks, it is always from the same angle.

The third and final rule of continuity is match on action. We see this when one of the characters gets up at the 24th second and the shot cuts to see him walking around and getting hit onto the pencil by the Joker.

Introduction

This blog will be used to keep all of my practical production work and the plans that I will make. It will also hold all of the deconstructions that I make on other films and any extra information that I will need for my work.
